As you tour the island of Nevis, you will see many fine examples of the pottery work done at The Newcastle Pottery Works. Almost every restaurant, villa rental, hotel,
business, etc. will have at least one example of the local pottery. The potter is still hand crafted in the traditional Nevis manner, and still fired in the midst of a pile of smoldering coconut shells. This
firing process is what gives the pottery its distinctive patina. I am sure once you see some of the pieces, you will want to take some back home with you. I personally have at least a dozen or more
pieces and have given dozens more away as gifts....much to the joy of the receivers. If you can arrange the time, be sure to go to watch the pottery pieces being fired. You will have to call ahead to see
when they are doing the firing, as it is not done everyday. So have some fun, learn something, and buy some gifts all at the same time. |
